At CHoR, we care not only for children’s medical needs, but for their whole families – offering healing and hope for bodies, minds and spirits. That’s why the multi-faith chapel is such an integral space in our Children’s Tower. The chapel and chaplaincy team are available to all CHoR patients and families, no matter their faith or spiritual background.
“Families at CHoR are often on a journey they never intended to be on, so to have a place like this where they can find quiet and peace and renew their faith, strength and courage is incredibly important,” said Jeniece Roane, vice president of operations at the chapel dedication ceremony.
Sometimes team members can use some time and space to recharge too. The chapel is open to all.
Rev. Marilyn Barnes, director of the Spiritual Care Department at VCU Health explains the chapel and her team’s role in offering the best care for kids and families at CHoR.
The chapel is located on the Children’s Tower Sky Lobby (level one), in the same hallway as the Ronald McDonald House.
Being in the hospital or clinic may increase anxiety, stress or a sense of isolation for patients and family members. The chapel is an inviting, calming space for them, and for team members, to come and reflect or spend time with or without a chaplain.
The chapel is available 24/7. It contains children’s books, a prayer request/reflection book, religious resources and candles. Just outside the chapel are CareNotes resources that include words of inspiration, guidance and comfort.
Spiritual care is an important part of providing holistic care. Chaplains partner with child life specialists, music therapists and members of the medical team. We also partner with social workers, members of the medical team and community members to care for the family members of our patients. This includes, where appropriate, engaging community faith leaders. Chaplains use numerous resources in offering emotional, spiritual and religious care. These include, but are not limited to, active listening, reading, games, prayers, music, meditation and reflection.
You are not alone. Our chaplains are here for you. We are available to journey with you, providing emotional, spiritual or religious support. We honor your space and autonomy.
Having a chapel in the Children’s Tower is a gift, and it was made possible thanks to a $250,000 gift from Dr. and Mrs. Richard Clary through Children’s Hospital Foundation. This donation was matched to make a $500,000 impact – and a priceless difference at CHoR.
Our chaplains are leaders in their field! CHoR chaplain Calvin Bradley, Jr. has been named president-elect of the Pediatric Chaplains Network, the first person of color to be elected to this position.
